WinterFire 2008

Just a reminder: WinterFire 2008 will be taking place in the First Cathedral in Bloomfield, CT this weekend. Night services will be held Thursday and Friday nights, February 14th & 15th. Day sessions will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Because of this event, there will be no youth group meeting on Friday, February 15th! Contact the church office if you'd like a ride and we'll hook you up with one.

Return from Beyond the Void

Yup, I was slacking off with this weblog. I've even neglected my personal weblog for nearly a month now, so all I can say is that at least I'm fairly even-handed. Now that I've returned, there are new photos in the Flickr pool for you check out. That should catch you up on the last couple outings; I don't have many more pictures, though, so you'll just have to come to everything in order to eliminate the film intermediate and see it all.

There will be a youth social this Friday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Be sure to call or email if you need directions or a ride.

It's half a day away, but here's wishing you a happy new year, anyway.

To start off the new year, there will be a Visioncasting Banquet on New Year's Day at the church. Youth meetings will be at the church every Friday at 7:30 pm as usual, except for January 27, when we will be attending the CT District Youth Lock-In.

Lastly - and this isn't youth-specific - instead of prayer groups this month, meetings will be held at the church from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm. (Except for the 24th, when the annual business meeting will be held.)

We Turned the Light On

The 2005 Youth Retreat, Life With the Light On, took place November 18th and 19th. Here's an account from one of our own:

Life With the Light On was a great success. Everyone arrived Friday evening with sleeping bags and pillows in hand. We had an hour lesson in which we learned several different things. One was the 4 things you need to have before making decisions - prayer, the bible, knowledge of your circumstances, and good advice. After that it was time for pizza and games like Guesstures, Mad Gab, Catchphrase, and I believe there was even a game of dodge ball (or should I say dodge bean bag). We also found many different uses for light sticks. Then it was lights out at 1am . . . 2am . . . 3am . . . 4am . . . finally, everyone was asleep at 4:30am.
The next morning was beautiful. Some of the early birds went on a short walk and then Nathaniel, Doniece, and Antoinette provided a delicious breakfast. Following that, we all learned the importance of devotions. It's all about relationship with God. It was great, as you could really feel God's presence. Then there were separate lessons for the boys and girls. Finally we all went canoeing out on the pond - well, everyone except our fearless leaders. All in all it was a great time of fun, fellowship, and learning.

To which the other replied, "That's what I said."

Okay, so they were more like wise guys than wise men. But speaking of retreats, there will be a youth retreat this weekend at the YMCA camp Ruskin Lodge. It will start Friday evening, when youth will arrive starting at 6:00 pm and will wrap up on Saturday afternoon around 1:00 pm.

No charge for attendace. Bring clothes, blankets/sleeping bags, toothpaste, that glow stick we gave you a while back, yourself, a friend, and a sense of humor (you'll need it). See you there!

Cooorrrn Maze!

The youth group will be going to the Davis Farmland & Mega Maze again this year. As a special treat, the maze changes every day. That's . . . wrong.

Anyway, if you're interested in going, we'll be meeting at the church at 9:45 am and leaving by 10:00 am, arriving back between 3 and 4 pm. Bring $7.95 per person and money for food.

Be sure to register for this on Sunday morning in the church vestibule! Our Fearless Leader needs to know how many people will be going so we have enough rides.

A Tale of 30 Days #2

Okay, I'll admit it - several events went past without a writeup on the blog. College be my scapegoat. But you shall not miss your TOTD! (Okay, so it's midmonth. Stop being so picky!)

First up, it's already gone by but we had a great time at the Sheaves for Christ rally in Manchester last weekend. Bro. Rich Strawcutter preached about taking off our boots . . . thankfully, everyone realized the spiritual principle he was talking about and didn't follow the command literally. Ask one of the young people to recap the sermon for you - or wait around and see if we post a writeup. Your choice.

On to current events: this weekend there will be a Youth Fireside Social on Friday, September 16th, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Nathaniel & Doneice Hardt's house. If you don't know where that is, you can call (860) 935-5107 for directions or perhaps a ride.

Every Sunday night this month there's a 5:30 pm Training Institute class on Sunday nights on Conversational Spanish. So far the class has been fun; considering the possibility of a missions trip next year to a Spanish-speaking country, I would encourage everyone to attend.

Here's the information I've gathered so far about the youth outing this weekend:

We'll be going to the Providence Place mall, leaving - note: leaving - the church at 10:00 am and returning at around 3:00 pm. Bring money for food and anything else you want.

So what's being planned, what are we doing, or . . . are we doing anything? Good questions.

Unofficial Revival

Several of the young men in the youth group have planned a prayer meeting this Friday, August 19th. This is not an official event, but I figured there was no harm in mentioning it here. The stated purpose is to hold monthly prayer meetings until the youth group doubles, facilitating the revival God is bringing to New England.

We will be meeting for this guys' prayer meeting at Bishop Hanson's house. If you'd like to attend, send me an email at grayman32001@yahoo.com and we'll see about getting you there.

A Tale of 30 Days #1

Bored this summer? Me too . . . kind of. Here's your remedy, folks. Every month we'll give you a rundown of the month's events (so you can spend all that free time thinking about the cool stuff we're going to do) and possibly a recap of the previous month's events. Ready? Okay, here we go . . .

As you are no doubt painfully aware, next month is August, a.k.a. Schoolman Begins. Still, it's just as exciting as ever. Every Friday there's youth meeting at the church. Okay, not every Friday. The meeting for the 26th was moved to the 27th, and it's not a meeting any more - it's an outing. Confused yet? Me too, since the calendar doesn't have any more information than that.

Of note in the rest of the world, the UPCI Connecticut District Camp Meeting will take place in Ashton, CT from August 14th to August 18th. I think registration to stay on the campground is actually closed (but am unsure), however the night services are open to everybody. See the Acts II calendar for more details.
There's also the New England Manna-Fest in Attleboro, MA, August 11th & 12th. Look forward to some great preaching and teaching this month, including our (Acts II's) own seminar in Worcester on Tuesday the 30th.

Here's the writeup of last week's mini-golf event by Nathan Hardt:

Personally, I thought that the batting cages were the most fun out of everything. Earlier in the evening I had also thought that I was a pretty good golfer, but Jordan and Ben [both under 6 –Ed.] now have more holes-in-one on their records than I do. Oh well, I still managed to blast the rest of my team away, and the ice cream was good. Other teams seemed to have the most “interesting” people – it’s a good thing Jonathan was with us, because there probably would have been a fight if he had been with them. (Something about stopping the balls, then counting it as a hole-in-one if it looked like it might have gone in.) My group was undoubtedly the most strictest one; there was no “oh well, take it anyway,” and Jonathan said, “We’re supposed to encourage one another.” (In mini-golf?) I thought that the funniest thing was on of our 6-foot-1 chaperones with a 13-inch putter. There were more non-youth than youth (11-9), [which is par for the course at mini-golf events –Ed]. But really, did you expect different from nine crazy teenagers and their equally crazy chaperones?
